SUPPORTING SUSTAINABLY SOURCED COCOA

When John Cadbury founded his company in 1824, he believed that chocolate could be a force for good in the world. The Cadbury family were pioneers of good business, putting people and communities at the heart of the way they made and sold their chocolate.

But this generous spirit didn’t stop there. When Cadbury Dairy Milk was first made in 1906 it was produced not just with a glass but a generous glass & a half of fresh milk - and still is today.

These founding principles inspire everything we do. That’s why our Cadbury Dairy Milk cocoa is sustainably sourced through the Cocoa Life program1.

Cocoa Life has been running since 2012 and touches many aspects of life for communities in cocoa growing regions - from farming techniques, to looking after the environment and supporting the local economy.

All this is done through working together with local people, so that everything happens in a way that is right for the area and can continue for years and decades to come.

By 2025, our goal is for 100% cocoa volume for Mondelēz International’s chocolate brands, including Cadbury’s, will be sourced through Cocoa Life1.

    PARTNERING WITH FAIRTRADE

The Cocoa Life program’s long-standing collaboration with Fairtrade builds on a relationship that started between Cadbury and Fairtrade in 2009. Today, Mondelez International partners with Fairtrade via the Cocoa Life program and the Green & Blacks brand. Our partnership with Fairtrade includes Green & Black’s long-standing commitment to source all the ingredients that can be Fairtrade2 on Fairtrade terms. Through the Cocoa Life program, we also work with Fairtrade on the second phase of the Cocoa Cooperative Organisational Strengthening Programme (CCOSP) in Ghana.

CCOSP was designed in collaboration with cocoa unions and utilizes Fairtrade Africa’s long-standing expertise in working directly with cooperatives. Since its launch in 2024, the second phase of the programme aims to strengthen how Ghanaian cocoa unions are governed, managed and resourced to become more professional and resilient market actors able to better respond to evolving market demands and the needs of farmers. To work towards this objective, Fairtrade Africa works closely with the cocoa unions as they build their capacity on governance, regulatory compliance, data management and access to finance.

At the start of the second phase of the program, Fairtrade conducted several assessments and studies to better understand the needs of the unions and their environment, and develop informed, tailored support. With funding from Mondelēz International and ISEAL, we recently commissioned a Feasibility Study on developing union-managed data systems in Ghana’s cocoa sector which was presented in a webinar in September 2025. This report summarizes the findings from the study and outlines concrete actions for supply chain actors to support a more effective data ecosystem.

With further funding from ISEAL, Fairtrade is now piloting a pioneering data ownership model for unions to own, manage and commercialize the data they collect to benefit them and their farmer members.

    1. Goal for cocoa volume sourced is based on a mass balance approach, which means that the equivalent volume of cocoa needed for the products sold under our chocolate brands is sourced from the Cocoa Life program. ↩
    2. The cocoa, sugar, vanilla, mint, almonds, hazelnuts and molasses in Green & Black's' products are sourced on Fairtrade terms↩
