Today, we have published our annual Cocoa & Forests Initiative (CFI) Progress Report, sharing an update on key activities from the CFI reporting period of October 2024 to September 2025, and how we have been supporting CFI’s ambition through Cocoa Life.
Since its inception in 2017, CFI has provided a framework for collaboration between the governments of Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana and about 36 global chocolate and cocoa companies, aimed to help address deforestation and help restore forest areas.
The completion of Phase Two of the Cocoa & Forests Initiative (CFI) marks an important milestone in the cocoa sector’s ongoing efforts to address deforestation risks within cocoa supply chains. Through Cocoa Life, Mondelēz International has continued working towards CFI’s ambitions, supporting efforts to help protect and restore forests while strengthening supply chain resilience.
Our overall CFI achievements (October 2022-September 2025):
- Farms mapped in Ghana & Cote d’Ivoire: ~225,0001
- Multi-purpose trees distributed for on-farm planting in Ghana & Côte d’Ivoire: ~3,485,0002
- Trees distributed for off-farm planting (reforestation) in Ghana & Côte d’Ivoire: ~1,104,1002
- Farmers provided with technical assistance (based on plans) to professionalize & optimize cocoa farming practices in Ghana & Côte d’Ivoire: ~307,5002
And the satellite monitoring results show near no deforestation (~1.2%3) on or closely around Cocoa Life registered farms in West Africa (Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, and Nigeria) since 2018.
Within a constantly shifting operating environment, we remained focused on building momentum and scaling initiatives that work in order to help address deforestation, strengthen supply chain resilience, and unlock opportunities for cocoa communities. Close collaboration with sector partners has enabled constructive dialogue on shared challenges and learnings through CFI working groups and reports.
Much has changed since the initiative’s original goals were set, with many ambitions related to addressing deforestation now becoming mandatory through regulation. While new challenges continue to emerge, so do new opportunities.
We continue to work with partners in the cocoa sector and beyond to contribute to defining new CFI ambitions, with the aim of considering and supporting stakeholders, and encouraging the collective action needed to advance these goals.
